The Ultimate Itinerary for Italy’s Best Destination 🇮🇹
- Airport
- By Train
- Must-Visit Place
- Recommended Itineraries
- Rent-a-car
Sicily offers friendly people, affordable prices, great weather, and stunning landscapes. Let me help you plan a perfect trip.
Sicily Airports
Sicily has two main airports: Palermo and Catania.
- Palermo
- Catania
Both airports are quite similar in size, with Palermo being slightly larger.
Both offer various flights, so unless your trip is very short, I recommend using one for arrival and the other for departure.
This way, you can comfortably explore different cities. There is also a smaller airport in Trapani, but it has fewer flight options.
There is an airport in Trapani, but it has very few flights. Additionally, Trapani is less than an hour’s drive from Palermo Airport, making Trapani Airport less recommended.
Traveling by Train
You can take a train to mainland Italy, but I only recommend it if:
- You have plenty of time.
- You want to save on accommodation costs (night trains).
Otherwise, it’s not the best option.
Must-Visit Places in Sicily Travel Itinerary

In my opinion, there are three must-visit places in Sicily:
- Palermo – The capital of Sicily.
- Taormina – The most beautiful town.
- Favignana – A stunning island.
Recommended Sicily Travel Itinerary
Here are my personal recommendations for different trip durations:
1 Night:
- Consider coming back another time.
2 Nights:
- Option 1: Palermo 1 night, Favignana 1 night.
- Option 2: Catania 1 night, Taormina 1 night.
3 Nights:
- Option 1: Palermo 1 night, Trapani 1 night, Favignana 1 night.
- Option 2: Catania 1 night, Taormina 2 nights.
4 Nights (recommended minimum):
- Palermo 1 night, Favignana 1 night, Taormina 2 nights.
5 Nights (recommended):
- Palermo 1 night, Favignana 2 nights, Taormina 2 nights.
6 Nights:
- Palermo 1 night, Favignana 2 nights, Catania 1 night, Taormina 2 nights.
7 Nights (my itinerary):
- Based on the 6-night itinerary, add visits to nearby towns like Marsala, Syracuse, or Cefalù. I personally went to Syracuse.
Renting a Car
Driving in Sicily is easier than in many other places. The main challeng`e is the fast drivers on the highways, but if you stick to the slower lanes, you should be fine. I’d rate the driving difficulty as moderate to low.
I booked my rental through Rentalcars.com. Keep in mind that renting and returning the car at different locations can be more expensive. Here’s how I managed it:
- Palermo Airport Rental: I rented a car, toured Trapani and Favignana, and returned it in Palermo.
- Bus from Palermo to Catania: I then took a bus to Catania.
- Catania Airport Rental/Return: I rented another car in Catania and returned it there.
