Key Spots in Cancun and Surrounding Areas
Cancun Key Spots 1: Playa Mujeres: Not Recommended
Pros:
- Access to Isla Mujeres
- More affordable than the Hotel Zone for similar accommodations
Cons:
- Far from the airport
- Poor beach conditions and limited sunset views
Notable Hotels: TRS Coral, Atelier Playa Mujeres
Recommended for people who:
- been to Cancun many times before
- Who wants to go to Isla Mujeres
- I’ll be staying in a hotel, but Hotel Zone hotels are a bit expensive.
Playa Mujeres is definitely a beautiful vacation spot, and it’s also close to a beautiful island called Isla Mujeres. However, personally, I don’t think it’s as pretty as the ocean in the hotel zone and it’s a bit far from the airport. However, if it’s your first time in Cancun and you’re staying in a hotel, I would recommend it because it’s a bit cheaper than Hotel Zone.
Cancun Key Spots 2: Hotel Zone: Highly Recommended
Pros:
- Close to the airport
- Beautiful beaches
- Wide range of hotel options
- Plenty of infrastructure, including Coco Bongo
Cons:
- Slightly more expensive compared to other areas
Notable Hotels: Secrets The Vine, Hyatt Ziva, Grand Fiesta Americana
Recommended for people who:
- I value both recreation and tourism
- I don’t have time (close to the airport is good)
The Hotel Zone is exactly what we imagine a typical Cancun to look like. There is a wide variety of luxury resorts, so you can choose your accommodation according to your preferences. There are also clubs such as Coco Bongo, where you can not only relax, but also sightseeing and nightlife. Therefore, I think it is a must-visit place.
Cancun Key Spots 3: Playa del Carmen: Highly Recommended
Pros:
- Close to Xcaret
- Great for both relaxation and sightseeing
- Backpacker’s paradise
Cons:
- None, though if your itinerary is short, prioritize Xcaret and Hotel Zone
Notable Hotels: Various options from budget to all-inclusive
Recommended for people who:
- I value both recreation and tourism (more geared toward tourism compared to Hotel-zone)
- love backpacking
- Cancun is so expensive, you’ll have to save up for a few nights (plenty of great value options)
Playa del Carmen is similar to Hotelzone. However, it is a bit more tourist and nightlife oriented than Cancun’s Hotel Zone. Of course, there are both luxury resorts and budget accommodations, but I personally recommend staying at a budget resort here. If you have time, I also recommend visiting the island of Cozumel.
Cancun Key Spots 4: Xcaret: Highly Recommended
Pros:
- All-inclusive resort and activity hub
- Perfect for first-time visitors
Cons:
- Might not be as appealing on subsequent visits
- A little far from the airport
Notable Hotels: Hotel Xcaret, Xcaret Arte
Recommended for people who:
- first time in Cancun
- Loves water sports
- want to stay at an all-inclusive resort
We think Scarlett is a must-visit resort for first-time visitors to Cancun, and we recommend Scarlett Arte for adult couples and Scarlett Mexico for families. You can do water sports like selha and enjoy all-inclusive food, so you won’t regret your choice.
Ultimate Cancun Itinerary and Route
Here’s a Ultimate Cancun itinerary based on a 7-9 night stay:
- Xcaret Arte – 4 nights: All-inclusive with various activities
- Playa del Carmen – 2 nights: Stay in a budget hotel, explore Cozumel Island and local tours
- Hotel Zone – 3 nights: All-inclusive resort for relaxation
For stays based on 5-6 nights,
- Xcaret Arte – 3 nights: All-inclusive with various activities
- Hotel Zone – 3 nights: All-inclusive resort for relaxation
For stays shorter than 5 nights,
- Focus on only Xcaret Arte or Hotelzone
